Marketing a Published Book: What to Review Before Spending More

Review the intended reader, cover, description, available formats, reader journey and current campaign activity.

What should I review before hiring book marketing help?

Review the intended reader, cover, description, available formats, reader journey and current campaign activity. Share your retailer links, existing assets and any relevant performance reports. A marketing review should distinguish weak positioning, missing assets and channel problems before recommending more spending. No review or campaign can guarantee sales, rankings or a particular reader response.

Check whether the message reaches the right reader

Describe who the book is for and why that reader might choose it. Compare this with the promise made by the cover, description and promotional material. If those elements suggest different audiences, additional traffic may be difficult to interpret. Ask a prospective provider how it will use your genre, reader expectations and book positioning to select messages and campaign priorities.

Separate the asset work from campaign management

Find out whether the proposed engagement covers graphics, copy, landing pages, advertising setup, ongoing management or reporting. Ask which materials you supply and which the provider creates. Advertising spend should be identified separately from management and production fees. A defined asset list also makes it easier to assess whether the campaign can start now or depends on work that is still incomplete.

Agree what a useful report looks like

Reports should identify the work delivered, spending where applicable, available response data and the questions that remain open. Clicks and visits are different from purchases. Retailer and advertising systems may provide different views of the reader journey. Ask how the provider will explain those limits and when the campaign will be reviewed. Set a practical decision point for continuing, adjusting or stopping activity.

Prepare your marketing brief

Send the book title, genre, target readers, retailer links, author website and current campaign details. Include your budget range and whether you need a launch, relaunch or ongoing campaign. American Publishing Club can discuss the relevant marketing work and supporting assets. Keep the first scope specific enough that you can assess what was delivered before expanding it.
